If you are trying to lose weight you have probably been working out pretty hard. And when the weekend comes around it is tempting to just forget about your weight loss goal, break out the chocolate and spend the weekend on the couch.
However, it is vitally important to keep your momentum going and as such you should make it a rule to do at least some light and gentle exercise on Saturday and Sunday. Here are some ideas for you.
1. A long hike
One of my favorite things to do on a Sunday is pack a bag full of some lunch and water and head off on a long hike up the hills. I find this really refreshes my batteries as well as giving me an amazing light lower body workout. The hills in my area are dotted with little lakes and filled with waterfalls and chirping birds. It truly is a fantastic way to get some exercising while de-stressing and letting go of the previous week’s dramas.
2. Morning Tai Chi
Every morning at my local park there is a group who meets at 7am for Tai Chi. And on Saturday and Sunday they meet at 10am to cater for all the sleepy heads who need that extra time in bed. This is a fantastic form of light weekend exercise as it, again, is a great way to de-stress.
The wonderful thing about Tai Chi is that it is exercise and meditation at the same time. The benefits of this ancient Chinese practice are many – better sleep, balanced internal energies, healing of small illnesses, etc. If you have been working out with heavy weights or putting your body under a lot of stress you will really benefit from a Tai Chi session.
3. Swimming / Water walking
If you live near the beach then you have an amazing resource available to you. Even on the cold days, it is a great idea to head down there once a week for a swim or a water walk. The salt water and the fresh air will really heal your injuries and help you progress on your exercise path.
Water walking was introduced to me about a year ago when I tore the tendons in my ankle. My physiotherapist got me to go down to the beach and start walking in the shallow water. The salt would help with the healing and the water would take the pressure off my ankle. I found it to be a really enjoyable experience.
Yoga, like Tai Chi, is a way to exercise and relax at the same time. Ever since I have begun yoga I have been feeling younger, more alive and a lot more healthy. I have also noticed increased muscle tone and a lot better flexibility.
On the weekend you are not really feeling like running or lifting weights and a few light yoga poses can be the perfect remedy. You can do it at home or in a class and just do the moves that limber you up and get you sweating a little bit. Again, this will also help you repair the damage you might have done during the week.
5. An all-day bike ride
Something that has become really popular in my city is packing a lunch and a map and going on a big all-day bike ride with a bunch of friends or your husband. This is an excellent light exercise that will burn a lot of calories whilst helping you bond with those around you.
The wonderful thing about this idea is that you get to see a lot of your city. You can ride to the forest or in to the inner streets and see things that you have never noticed before because you were zooming past in a car. I have done this a few times and always enjoyed the ride immensely.
