Big Ben has been around for a few years so a Ben Roethlisberger workout is a familiar sight to his teammates and Steelers fans.  He was drafted way back in 2004 and has been the Steelers starting quarterback since he replaced an injured Tommy Maddox in just his second professional game.  A veteran of 3 Super Bowl appearances, 2 of which have been wins, Big Ben is a pivotal part of the Steelers team.  He’s also noted for his somewhat unorthodox game plan.  Not too many quarterbacks hang onto the ball as long as he does.  Not unexpectedly it’s also led to him getting some pounding, which is why he usually keeps some weight on.  It’s extra padding against the knocks and blows.

Even with the padding Ben has built up a fairly impressive injury list over the years.  Now staring 40 in the eye, he decided a couple of years ago that his excess weight was doing him more harm than good.  He was finding it hard to work out enough to maintain fitness due to stress on his joints.  This led to the addition of some cardio to his normal off-season workout routine and resulted in the loss of 15 pounds.  Today, a much trimmer, harder Ben Roethlisberger hits the field for the Steelers.

What else goes into the Ben Roethlisberger workout that makes him such a formidable quarterback and one of the best in the NFL?

As you’d expect, he does a lot of work to strengthen his core.  Strength here allows a player to change direction suddenly, twist, rotate, and withstand hits from other players.  To achieve this he ensures his lower back, abdominals, obliques, and hip muscles are strong and flexible.  He also makes sure to incorporate a number of different exercises into his routine, thus ensuring all muscle groups get a workout.  A common mistake people often make is doing the same exercises all the time.  All this does is work the same muscle groups and eventually that leads to muscular adaptation.  It certainly doesn’t help build up overall strength across a range of muscle groups.

Some of his more typical exercises include medicine ball sit-ups and tosses, swiss ball hyperextensions, and rotary torso twists.  These build up strength in his obliques, which are the muscles running down the side of the stomach.  Most other players work on stomach muscles with crunches but in reality, it’s those obliques that do a lot of the twisting and turning work.

His current contract with the Steelers runs out in 2020 but if his current form is any indication, Big Ben will be around for a few seasons yet.  He’s also a great example for younger players in the team.  If Ben can still work out like he does at 36, it should be much easier for them!
