Common Vitamin Deficiencies and How They May be Affecting You

Many of us grow up understanding the importance of vitamins and minerals, but are unsure of the unique features of these amazing substances.

Millions of people throughout the world are struggling with a vitamin deficiency without ever even knowing it, and this is why it is important for everyone to understand some of the leading deficiencies and how they can be remedied with small changes to one’s diet.

The two primary types of vitamins are fat soluble and water soluble.  Fat soluble vitamins include A, D, E, and K, and these can be stored in one’s body for weeks or even months.  Many individuals will find themselves deficient in water soluble vitamins, however, as they are either immediately process by the body or excreted out.

One of the most common deficiencies is for vitamin B12.  This vitamin can be found in milk, eggs, and other animal products and vegetarians should be especially careful about their B12 intake.

Vitamin B9, also referred to as a folate, is extremely important for proper blood flow and those with stomach or intestinal diseases may not be able to absorb it at a proper rate.  Finally, vitamin C is an essential substance that acts as an anti-oxidant, fights infections, and is a building block for soft tissue throughout the body.

Those that do not ingest enough vitamin C will be at a higher risk of common infections, gingivitis, and often bruise easy.

For individuals that are unsure if they are consuming sufficient vitamins and minerals, simple over-the-counter supplements are one of the best options to complete one’s diet.
