How to Lose Weight After Pregnancy

Ladies, are you looking for a good program to help you lose weight after pregnancy?  Since we’re often working overtime trying to get back in shape, as well as take care of a new baby, it’s understandable that most new mothers struggle when attempting to lose weight after pregnancy.  With time feeling more limited and with an increased work load, is trying to lose weight after pregnancy even a sensible goal?

Yes, it is! Here are several strategies you can use so that you don’t get exhausted or become too overwhelmed.

Schedule Time for Yourself

This may be easier said than done, but in order to be able to take care of others, you really need to take care of yourself. That means using your time to get into shape. It may be hard to find 30 to 60 minutes to work out, so try to get your spouse, a relative, or a friend to look after your baby while you exercise. You may be able to find a health club that has a day care system which offers infant care. If this isn’t possible, plan your home workouts to correspond with the baby’s nap times.

Your workouts don’t need to be 60 minute sessions, they can be broken up into several 15 minute sessions.  It’s the total amount of time working out that is the most critical.

Eat Healthy Foods for More Energy

In order to lose weight after pregnancy, getting enough calories each day is highly important.  Be sure that you increase your calories if you are breastfeeding.

Your body’s metabolism can significantly decrease if you are not getting enough calories in your diet.  In fact, it could slow by as much as 20 – 30% of it’s normal rate.  Also, keep in mind, that if you eat lots of junk food, your baby and you will both be starving for the right nourishment, and you will begin to feel sluggish and tired.  This could have a very negative impact on your motivation to continue with your weight loss goals.

Start “grazing”.  This means preparing smaller helping sizes, however, you eat more often during the day.  Avoid going more than 2-3 hours without putting some healthy food into your system.  Your diet should contain lots of calcium, such as low-fat dairy products and dark green veggies. Calcium is great for shifting your metabolism into super-high gear.  Complete a well-rounded diet by including fresh fruits, whole grains, and lean protein products as wholesome food choices.

Bring Baby Along

Weight loss doesn’t have to be done alone.  You can lose weight after pregnancy in a very fun way simply by bringing your baby along for the ride!  Becoming a member of an online weight loss community helps you meet other new moms around you who may be able to go on your stroller walks and participate in swimming time with the little ones.  Also, check your local fitness clubs for “mom and tot” exercise classes.

If you are looking to devote some private time to your baby, try pushing them around in their stroller for a long walk.  Being creative about where you go will give you both a welcome change in scenery.  Some ideas include indoor or outdoor malls, zoos, nearby parks, or just following different routes around your own neighborhood.  After your baby starts walking on their own, burn some serious calories by going to a playground – and then run and play like they do.  It’s exciting how quickly you can lose weight while having loads of fun when bringing your child along for the wonderful ride!

Gather Support

Support networks are critical for new mothers. Most women who try to lose weight after pregnancy often realize that it’s extremely difficult to do by themselves.  Family and friends can be key to your success, especially if they can offer babysitting assistance or even just cheer you up when you feel down.

There are many new moms who also want to lose weight after pregnancy, just like you.  It’s a great idea to unite with them, because they will likely know exactly what obstacles you are facing. Look for a friendly community of new moms who are also striving to lose weight.  Learn about their struggles and how they triumphed over them.  Be sure to share about the things you have overcome as well. You’ll be amazed by how great it feels to find out that you’re not the only one.

Get Sufficient Sleep

This may be the most difficult tip for new moms to keep, but it’s crucial that you try.  Too little sleep can cause many physical and emotional complications, causing it to become much harder to lose weight after pregnancy.  Sadly, reports show that most people don’t get sufficient sleep.  Babies who are not yet sleeping through the night greatly contribute to this dilemma.

Pregnancy is rough on the body, and the extra stress that a newborn brings can quickly leave you feeling exhausted.  Get 8-10 hours of sleep at least 3 times per week by having your spouse, a relative, or a friend answer the baby’s cries for you.  If necessary, use ear plugs.  The much needed sleep you’ll get will help you feel energized and refreshed, along with many other physical and emotional benefits.

Breastfeeding moms will likely have to wait a bit longer before adequate sleep is again a regular part of your life.  At this point, sleep whenever you can, and remember that, someday soon, you and your baby will be sleeping through the night.
