Did the Jimmy Garoppolo workout get any pointers from superstar QB Tom Brady?
Apart from his luck in landing a gig with the 49’ers and his current salary, Jimmy Garoppolo’s NFL career thus far has been somewhat ill fated! He was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2014. However, he wound up playing second string to Tom Brady for almost his entire 3½ years with the team. Whilst he may have learned a great deal from the ace quarterback, his actual playing time was very limited. About the only highlight was when TB was handed a 4 game suspension in 2016 for his role in Deflagate. Jimmy took over as their starting QB but as luck would have it, only completed 2 games before injuring his shoulder.

Jimmy was eventually traded to the 49’ers midway through 2017. He got in a few minutes of playing time in his first game for them and was subsequently named as their starting QB for the following game. The 49’ers went on to complete 5 successive wins with Jimmy G in this position. The streak, combined with his previous 2-win streak for the Patriots, took Jimmy’s starting win streak to 7-0. Something that hadn’t been done by any starting quarterback since Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger in 2004.
It was also enough to convince the 49’ers to offer him a lucrative 5 year contract at the start of the 2018 season, worth $137.5 million. This made him the highest paid player in the NFL at that time. Was this trust misplaced? He had after all just completed his 4th season with only a handful of games to show for it during that time. Granted, he was playing in the same position on the same team as the legendary Tom B so that’s not surprising. However, talent scouts and team management must have considered the young, definitely under utilized player had something!
Jimmy Garoppolo Workout – Did Tom Brady Contribute?
When you go back to his high school and college playing years you begin to see why the 49’ers clearly believe Jimmy G is the future of the team. During his final year at college he was the OVC Male Athlete of the Year for 2013/14. And the College Football Performance FCS National Quarterback of the Year for 2013. Those are impressive awards, and no doubt a large part of the reason the Pats selected him in the draft. Combine that with the mentoring he undoubtedly received from Tom B and the rest of the Patriots, and Jimmy G becomes an attractive package. Albeit one with limited game exposure.
Unfortunately, after a preseason spent full on training with his new team and learning all the game plays, Jimmy only got to participate in 3 games before injuring his knee.
