Most of us have heard about human growth hormone, or HGH. But how many actually know what it really is, and does?

HGH is a hormone produced by the Somatotroph cells in the anterior part of the pituitary gland. It is made up of some 190 amino acids. As its name suggests, HGH is needed for normal developmental tissue growth, particularly in children and teenagers. Whilst production of HGH continues throughout the entire life of a person, it’s at its highest during childhood and adolescence. After puberty, production of HGH slows down, leading to a corresponding slow down in physical growth as we approach maturity.

In adults, HGH is needed to help regulate metabolism. It is involved in protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It’s also needed for normal muscle tissue growth and maintenance. So whilst an adult doesn’t produce anywhere near the amount of HGH they did as a child and teenager, he or she still produces enough to maintain these functions. Indeed, the adult human body is specifically designed to produce sufficient maintenance levels of HGH under normal circumstances. Normal circumstances for maintaining adequate production of HGH include a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, exercise, and most importantly, good sleep patterns.

In fact, good sleep is critically important because HGH is released naturally during the first few hours of sleep. So if you aren’t getting enough sleep, or your sleep is of poor quality, you’re reducing the amount of HGH your pituitary gland releases. Another way to naturally boost production of HGH is through regular exercise, particularly weight training. Weight training is proven to have a beneficial effect of HGH levels. The more you do, the more HGH your body will produce. In an ideal world, we’d all have good sleep routines, eat well and exercise enough. That would ensure we produced enough HGH naturally. And there are plenty of different types of HGH supplements on the market. They come in nasal and oral sprays, injections and dietary supplements.

When used in situations where the body is unable to produce it naturally, there is medical support for the use of HGH supplements. But it’s not such a good idea to use them for things like anti-aging, increased muscle gain and the like. For a start, there is no evidence to suggest they do anything to reverse the aging process. Secondly, long-term use of HGH supplements has been linked to adverse side effects.
