The right and wrong way to losing weight

Today, there is a growing population of adults as well as teenagers who suffer from obesity. The pressure to lose weight is also growing especially among teenagers, and we are seeing more and more each day some of them going to extreme measures to take the weight off.

No one wants to be overweight especially not a teenage boy or girl. More often than not, teenagers will do whatever it takes to lose the weight to gain a better social status at school. But, are their weight loss techniques ultimately causing more damage than good? Let’s take a look at some of the ways used to lose weight.

A lot of teens will start by skipping one meal a day. If this doesn’t work then they will try skipping two meals a day, and only having one very light meal to try and satisfy their hunger. By skipping two meals a day and only eating one evening meal, you take a chance of overeating at the evening meal. Using this technique to lose weight can be risky in that it can cause elevated fasting glucose levels and a delay in insulin response, which can ultimately lead to diabetes and other long-term health problems.

Some people try using water pills and laxatives as a way to lose weight. Water pills, or diuretics, do not cause fat loss but rather depletes your body of water, so you are only dehydrating yourself rather than losing any excess fat. Likewise, laxatives do not cause fat loss but rather only depletes your body of fluid. Long-term laxative use can sometimes lead to arrhythmia, heart attack, and sometimes even death. These are very dangerous methods to use in an attempt to lose weight.

Two more very dangerous methods to use in an attempt to lose weight are trying to starve yourself and making yourself vomit after eating, commonly referred to as anorexia and bulimia. Both of these methods can result in death. In the case of anorexia, your body will begin to feed on itself. You can start losing your hair, getting sick more often, and anorexia can lead to heart problems and death. In the case of bulimia, people will overeat and then induce vomiting. Bulimics also sometimes take diuretics and laxatives to assist in weight loss. Bulimia can cause health problems such as anemia, irregular or nonexistent menstrual cycles, tooth decay, and tearing of the esophagus.

If you desperately want to lose weight, try the good, old fashioned methods of weight loss, such as healthy eating habits, and getting around 8 hours of peaceful sleep every night, and plenty of exercise. Talk to your family doctor about different weight loss programs that can help you lose the desired amount of weight without adversely affecting your overall health. Use the internet to research different weight loss methods and programs, choose one that interests you, and then have a conversation with your doctor to determine if that program is one that will help you lose weight as well as keep you healthy.
