The guy is tough when it comes to discipline. For the movie roles that he played, he bulked up.

At other times, he was required to slim down, which he did effortlessly. Think about his three recent films — The Dark Knight Rises, Warrior, and Bronson. 

For Bronson, the need for him was to put on about 40 lbs  of mass, including fat and muscles.

He was 5’9” and said he was gaining 7 lbs. every single week. To achieve what was required, the training was mostly about bodyweight resistance techniques.

You can say that those are things are jail stuff — lots and lots of ab exercises, pull-ups and press-ups.

At that time, he was required to show some fatty bulk on his body, so Hardy’s diet wasn’t pure meat and he didn’t have to take steroids.

For losing half a stone each week, he would eat rice and chicken during the day. Then he would drink Coca-Cola together with pizza in between meals.

Then came the movie Warrior, for which he would have to build up a leaner frame. In this movie, Hardy played the role of an ex-soldier.

He did the MMA fighter stuff to get his body losing fats and weight. He would be seen doing muay thai, kickboxing, and boxing in preparation and he was doing all these on a daily basis.

The diet was meatier and depleted of carbohydrates. He ate five to six meals consisting only of proteins.

The guy remembered eating only broccoli and chicken for most of these meals. The goal was to control his body from storing fat.

He said it was one of the toughest times in his life, because he was keeping up with the only-protein diet while engaging in a very grueling exercise routine.

Hardy was then asked to add more weight for The Dark Knight Rises and to play the Bane character.

The required additional weight was 30 lbs. Bane was to be coming from prison, so the needed look would be something not-too-Bronson- and not-too-Conlon-looking.

The specifics of the workout to achieve this were not revealed in any articles or interviews. What people have were only speculations and these were all about the 5×5 regimen.

To a good idea of how the 5×5 regimen works, think about doing 5 repetitions of a certain exercise for one set and doing the same set 5 times in one day.

The interval between each set should be 3 minutes.

For Hardy, the workouts were performed every other day. So, if you will do one set on a Monday, the next set will be done on Wednesday, and then the next will be on Friday.

There are two sets of exercises — deadlifts and squats — and you will have to do them alternately.

For example:

  • For Monday — Do the squats. That will be overhead press and bench press squats. Each should be done 5 x 5.
  • For Tuesday — Relax. Take a break.
  • For Wednesday — Do the overhead and bench for deadlifts, also 5 x 5.

For the following days, just continue the switching. Add 10 lbs. of weights each session. Additional weights for lifts on overhead press should be only 5 lbs. each session.

Basically, that’s how it went on for the man of the hour.

In preparing for Warrior, Hardy’s coach revealed that he trained Tom not to make him look like he can fight. What’s more important is to train Tom how it is to do actual fighting.
