Flower Power – The Healing Benefits Of Flowers

The healing power of plants and flowers has been known to traditional medicine for centuries. It’s also a fact that most of our modern ‘miracle’ drugs had their origins in healing plant chemicals. In some countries, homeopathic treatments are now offered alongside standard medical treatment and given the same importance.

There are lots of ways you can use the healing benefits of plants yourself, particularly flowers. Aromatherapy is one. Some of the more popular essential aromatherapy oils include lavender, peppermint, calendula, chamomile, tea tree, orange blossom (Neroli) and marjoram. Aromatherapy oils are generally diluted with carrier oils like almond and jojoba to provide a range of therapeutical benefits.

Bitter Orange Tree Flowers For Stress Relief

Known flower oils that help with stress are neroli, lavender, marjoram and peppermint. Inhaling a few drops of neroli oil for instance is a great way to ease nervous tension and settle stomach butterflies. This oil, distilled from the fragrant flowers of the bitter orange tree, is excellent for anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, and even depression caused by stress. It has also been used successfully to help with indigestion.

Getting Over Jet Lag With Lavender Flower Oil

Lavender is probably one of the best known and popular flower oils. Combined with marjoram, sweet almond and calendula oil, it helps reduce the effects of jet lag. Simply massage on after a warm bath for best results. Inhaling lavender oil helps ease travel sickness and nausea. Peppermint oil also works well for this too.

Peppermint And Lavender Oil – Also Great For Headaches

A combination of lavender and peppermint oils mixed in almond oil and massaged on your temples, forehead, sides and base of the neck helps ease migraines and headaches. Suffer from insomnia? A few drops of lavender oil on the pillow often promotes better sleep. These two oils – peppermint and lavender, can also be used in sweet almond oil and rubbed onto the stomach to help ease indigestion. Peppermint tea is another soothing concoction for an upset stomach.

Healing Aromatherapy Oils For Children

If you have children, make essential plant oils and essential part of your parenting kit! Lavender, chamomile, tea tree and calendula oils are all great plant aromatherapy oils for helping sort out all the various mishaps that can happen with kids!

Inhaling a few drops of lavender oil helps children relax. Another great tip for lavender oil if you have a baby is to apply some to your neck and shoulders when you’re carrying him or her. It will rub off onto them and help soothe them. Planting lavender bushes has long been an accepted way of keeping insect pests away and lavender oil works the same way. Rub some on yourself and the children to keep flies and mosquitos away. Lavender, calendula and chamomile oils are also helpful for healing cuts and bruises whilst lavender and aloe vera gel work wonders with sunburn.

Romantic Aromatherapy Oils

Popular romantic plant oils are jasmine and rose. These beautifully scented oils mix well with jojoba oil to make the perfect natural perfume and body oil. Adding a few drops to your bath water or bath gel will also have you smelling and feeling wonderful! Ylang Ylang is another very potent oil with a heady oriental scent that works well for romantic occasions.
