For years we have believed that having a big breakfast is the key to weight loss, since if we have a huge morning feast, we will be less hungry by lunch time, meaning that our mid-day meal will be smaller. We have lived with this notion for decades, but that is all over now. Apparently, big breakfasts do not make you consume less calories throughout the day, but rather will make you eat more!
Since we are eating more throughout the day as a result of a big breakfast, we are now being told to have a small breakfast. It is believed that a small breakfast will help increase your metabolism as you will likely have a snack before lunch.
Oatmeal is still in
Good news for those wanting a heavy breakfast to start the day. According to experts, oatmeal is still aloud on your breakfast menu thanks to the hefty dose of carbohydrates and loads of fiber. It has also been proven that oatmeal lower your LDL cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol, simply due to the amount of fiber in the warm goop.
Other great sources of soluble fiber include apples, pears, kidney beans and prunes; the latter will also slow down your digestion, giving you less desire to eat later on in the day.
Poached instead of fried
The food you love from a traditional “big breakfast” can still be enjoyed, just in less quantity and with different cooking methods. Instead of frying your eggs, try poaching them. The egg is cooked in water instead of oil, so you’re already doing your body a favor. Combine your eggs with toast and you have a protein and whole grain-rich meal to start your day.
Multi-grain waffles if you have a sweet tooth
Some people wake up and need a quick sugar jolt to start the day. The problem is that these people tend to reach for pancakes or French toast to get their fix. A better solution is to choose a whole-grain waffle from your favorite grocery store. Most healthy waffles are also made with protein rich flour substitutes such as amaranth. But don’t go reaching for the bottle of syrup quite yet; too much sugar for any diet. For a sweet kick to your waffles, try topping them with yogurt of your favorite fruit jelly.
Keep it under 400 calories
The old belief of filling your gills at the start of the day is based on calorie intake. If you eat a lot at one time, you won’t be hungry for long. The odds are you will become hungry, quite possibly as hungry as you would normally. As a result, try to keep your breakfast calorie count under 400. This allows you to still enjoy your favorite foods, but just in smaller sizes.
