What Causes Hair Loss? Myths or Facts?

Today I wanted to post about common hair loss causes that would fall into the old wise tale category. If you look into these types of hair loss causes you will find a wide range of opinions on whether they are myth or fact. Let’s take a look at some of these:

Do you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father?

The answer here is yes and no but definitely more on the yes side. You inherit the X chromosome from your mother which was passed on by her father and this is where the baldness gene comes from. Females are a set of 2 X’s. Males are an X and a Y. For a guy the X chromosome comes from the mother and the Y chromosome from the father. Since your mother is 2 X’s it depends on which X was passed down. If your maternal grandfather is bald then it is logical that one of your mother’s X chromosomes has the baldness gene. Just doing simple math there is a 1 in 2 chance you received the baldness gene. Since the other X chromosome your mother inherited came from her mother it depends also on her mothers father. This can get tricky but in conclusion if your maternal grandfather has a full head of hair then there is a very good chance you will keep your hair. If your maternal grandfather is bald then there is a very good chance you will be bald also. This is if you don’t attempt to do anything about it. Keep reading my site to learn about products that will help you keep your hair. You just have to get started while you still have your hair.

Does wearing a hat cause hair loss?

I am going to offer my personal opinion on this since some people believe it does and other’s do not. I believe there is some truth to this. Have you ever noticed how many professional baseball players have thinning hair? Obviously they have worn a cap for most of their lives. My father worked in a refinery all his adult life and always wore a hard hat which my mother believed contributed to his hair loss.

Does stress cause hair loss?

What Causes Hair Loss? Myths or Facts? This is a definite yes. This goes for both men and women of course. I dated a girl in high school who had a mean father and the stress of dealing with him at one point caused all of her hair to fall out. They took her to the doctor but he could not find anything physically wrong with her. The mother eventually divorced the father and once he was out of the picture all her hair grew back. I have also seen this with stressful jobs and dealing with difficult bosses. Chinese philosopher Laozi 2,500 years ago surmised that if you are depressed, you are living in the past; if you are anxious, you are living in the future; and if you are at peace, you are living in the present. This is how I deal with stress. I have learned to live in the present. Don’t worry about the past it is gone and there is nothing you can do about . When you find your mind drifting off to the past or future try to bring your thoughts back to the present by focusing on objects in the room. Then say out loud to yourself “I’m Back”. I find this is a good trick to get my mind back to the present.

Does Yo-Yo dieting contribute to hair loss?

It has been shown that yo-yo dieting, where weight is lost and then put back on and the cycle continues, can contribute to hair loss.

Does washing your hair too much contribute to hair loss?

This has proven to be false. Frequent washing, dandruff, gels, hairspray and the like do not contribute to hair loss. There is some truth to the overuse of hot blow dryers and curling irons, etc. that can damage the hair and contribute to hair loss.

Does forgoing eating red meat contribute to hair loss?

Red meat does provide iron which is good for hair. Iron deficiency has been shown to contribute to hair loss. I am not suggesting that the vegetarians out there need to eat meat, I am just saying that you may want to take an iron supplement.

Does having too much sex contribute to hair loss?

For men testosterone is one of the factors involved in hair loss. Just looking at this logically if you are having sex all the time you would expect your body to be continually producing more testosterone which may be contributing to your hair loss. The good news is research shows that men who are bald and men with a full head of hair have about the same amount of testosterone. So this is a myth. Thank goodness.

There you have it. I would appreciate your feedback on these. Please feel free to comment below. I look forward to hearing your opinions. Please share your story.
