If you’re overweight, and have been for some time, it can be tough to know just what your ideal weight is. Most of us couldn’t or shouldn’t strive to be the same weight we were in high school for example. So that may leave you scratching your head trying to figure out what is the right weight for my height, the good news is that it may not be all that hard to find out.
For most people, the best way to calculate what their ideal weight should be is as simple as figuring out what their BMI, or body mass index, is. Although this will give you an idea of where you are at, it is only an estimate. But, let’s be honest, for most people they can find out by looking in the mirror if they are on target when it comes to getting to and maintaining the proper weight.
After all, everyone is built differently. It’s one thing to say that a man that is six feet tall should weigh no more than 185 pounds, but what if that man is very well built? If he’s a body builder and very muscular it’s likely that any ‘extra’ weight is all muscle. So while BMI is a good starting point it shouldn’t be thought of as a do all end all.
If you need to get in better shape there are only two core components you need to keep in mind: exercise and diet. I know, you were expecting something new, but if you eat the proper amount of well balanced, nutritious foods and keep active you will be at the proper weight.
Don’t get too hung up on some elaborate diet or exercise plan. If ever there was a time to use the ‘K.I.S.S’ philosophy, this is it. Keep it simple, stupid. Keep your diet balanced with the proper proportions of carbs, fat, and protein and keep your exercise routine balanced with the right amount of weight training and cardio and you’ll find that the weight will come off and you’ll have a much tighter, more toned body in a shorter period of time than you might have thought possible.
Don’t fall victim to the outdated notion that cardio is king when it comes to weight loss. Actually that has been proven to not be all that accurate. If you truly want to be healthy and in good shape you want to keep your body guessing, so endless time on the cardio equipment at your local gym isn’t the best way to go. Instead ‘surprise’ your muscles with interval cardio sessions so that your body doesn’t become accustomed to a certain level. That is the most efficient way to lose weight and get in shape.
For anyone who has wondered, what is the right weight for my height, the answer is to start by checking your BMI. That may not be the most definitive answer around but it is a great place to start. Just don’t expect a quick fix if you find that you have some work to do. Instead plan on making changes to your daily routine and remember, small changes can make a big difference.
